How to Install Your Turkey eSIM

A Turkey eSIM works best when you set it up before you leave. It takes a few minutes over home wifi, and once you land at Istanbul Airport, Sabiha Gökçen, or in Antalya, all that’s left is switching on data roaming. This guide covers when to install, how it works on iPhone and Android, and what to do if something doesn’t work.

When Should You Install Your eSIM?

Install your eSIM at home, well before departure, while you’re on your own wifi. Turkey is outside the EU, so there’s no automatic “roam like at home” arrangement the way there is inside the European Union — you need to sort out your data plan yourself, ahead of time. Installing and activating are two separate steps: installing (putting the profile on your device) can happen days in advance, while activating (turning on data roaming) only happens once you’ve landed in Turkey. That way you don’t lose a day of your plan mid-flight, and you’re not fumbling with settings on airport wifi when you arrive.

Installing an eSIM on iPhone

1. Go to Settings > Cellular > Add eSIM (on newer models sometimes Add Cellular Plan).
2. Scan the QR code you received from Ariya Mobile by email, or use automatic installation through the Ariya app.
3. Name the new line — “Turkey,” for example — and set it up as your data line, not for calls.
4. Keep your Belgian or Dutch SIM active for calls and texts, so family can still reach you on your usual number.

This works on iPhone XS (2018) and newer.

Installing an eSIM on Android

The exact steps vary slightly by brand, but the pattern is the same: Settings > Connections (or Network & Internet) > SIM Manager > Add eSIM. Scan the Ariya QR code, name the line, and set it as your data source once you’re in Turkey. On most Samsung phones (Galaxy S21 and newer) and Google Pixel phones (Pixel 3 and newer), this sits under SIM Cards or Network Settings.

Checklist on Arrival in Turkey

• Turn on data roaming for the eSIM line once you’ve landed at Istanbul Airport (IST), Sabiha Gökçen (SAW), or Antalya Airport (AYT).
• Check that your phone connects automatically to Turkcell, Vodafone Türkiye, or Türk Telekom.
• Set mobile data specifically to the eSIM line, not your Belgian or Dutch SIM — otherwise you’ll still pay roaming charges.
• Visiting family outside the big cities? Coverage is generally solid in smaller towns inland too, though signal can be weaker in mountainous areas.

Common Problems

No connection after landing. Check that data roaming is switched on for the eSIM line specifically, and that it’s set as the default line for data — this is the most common mistake.

Weak signal inland. In mountainous or remote areas, signal can be weaker in places. That applies to every Turkish provider, not just your eSIM.

WhatsApp or other apps stop working briefly. Turkey occasionally applies temporary, nationwide restrictions on social media around sensitive news events. That’s a measure from the Turkish authorities, not a fault with your eSIM, and it usually clears within a few hours.
